What Should I Wear Under My Wedding Dress?

Bride Choosing Lingerie Under My Wedding Dress

Your wedding day is one of the most joyful, emotional, and memorable days of your life — and you’ll want to feel completely at ease from start to finish.

You’ll be on your feet for hours, hugging everyone you love, eating (hopefully), dancing, and being photographed from every angle. While the dress naturally takes centre stage, what you wear underneath plays an equally important role — if not more.

After two decades of fitting brides at Plums Lingerie, we’ve seen just about everything. So here’s what truly matters when it comes to your wedding-day underwear.

The most common mistake

The biggest mistake we see is leaving underwear as an afterthought.

It’s incredibly easy to fall in love with a dress first, and only later start wondering how you’re actually going to wear a bra with it. But if you usually wear a bra — especially if you have a fuller bust and rely on that support — it’s something to think about from the very beginning, not something to fix later.

Fabric plays a part too. Silky, form-fitting dresses will show every line underneath. That beautiful bias-cut satin might look effortless, but it doesn’t leave much room to hide structured lingerie. Often, the simplest and most elegant solution is choosing a dress with support built in from the start.

The second mistake? Buying lingerie too early. Bodies change — it’s completely normal. Buying a bra a year in advance rarely works out well. The right time is much closer to your final fitting.

Start with a proper bra fitting

Before you even begin dress shopping, it’s worth getting properly fitted for a bra.

This isn’t about finding your wedding-day bra — it’s about understanding your shape as it is now. A well-fitted bra can completely change where your bust sits, which in turn changes how a dress fits through the bodice, cups, and neckline.

We often see brides come back to try their dress again after a fitting, and the difference is remarkable. The dress hasn’t changed — but the way it sits has.

All you need is a bra that gives you your best shape, so you can see how a dress will truly fit you.

What can you actually wear?

The right option will always come down to your dress — but just as importantly, it comes down to what you already feel comfortable in.

Traditional bras

Your neckline will guide you here. A balcony bra works beautifully under a square neckline, for example. If you’re used to a full-cup bra, make sure your dress accommodates it properly — you should feel like yourself, just on your best day.

One simple rule: your wedding day isn’t the time to experiment. If something has never felt comfortable before, it’s unlikely to suddenly feel right now.

Strapless bras

A good option for strapless or off-the-shoulder gowns — but only if you already get on with them. If you’ve never found a strapless bra that feels secure, it’s worth being honest about whether it will last the whole day.

Adhesive bras

Ideal for backless or low-cut dresses, or when you just need a little lift. They tend to work best for smaller busts or lighter support.

One important tip: apply to completely clean, dry skin. No moisturiser, no powder — otherwise they won’t stay in place.

Built-in support

Many modern dresses, particularly corseted styles, already have structure built in. In these cases, you may not need a bra at all — just your briefs. In fact, this is what most brides we see end up choosing.

Briefs

There’s no shortage of beautiful options — from seamless styles to delicate lace. The key is choosing what feels right for you.

If you’ve never worn a thong, your wedding day is not the moment to start. Comfort matters far more than trying something new.

And if you do find a set you love, it’s always worth buying the matching bra too — even if you don’t wear it on the day.

Shapewear

Many brides feel they need to smooth everything out, but it’s worth remembering that bodies aren’t meant to be completely flat — and they don’t need to be.

If you do choose shapewear, think about practicality. Dresses with corseted backs can make quick changes… less than quick. It’s worth considering before you commit.

Choosing the right colour

Nude or skin-toned underwear is usually the safest choice, especially under lighter fabrics.

It often surprises brides that white or ivory underwear is actually more visible under a white dress, particularly if the fabric is even slightly sheer. Nude tones tend to disappear completely.

If your dress is coloured, though, you have more freedom — and it can be a lovely opportunity to choose something that feels personal.

When to buy

A simple timeline makes everything easier:

  • Before dress shopping — Get properly fitted for a bra
  • When choosing your dress — Consider what it will require underneath
  • A few weeks before your final fitting — Buy your wedding-day lingerie
  • At your final fitting — Wear exactly what you’ll wear on the day

The most important thing

On your wedding day, your underwear should be something you never have to think about.

If something is digging in, slipping, or distracting you, it will stay with you all day — and this is a day you want to be fully present for.

Choose what you know works. Choose what feels good. The goal is simple: to forget you’re even wearing anything at all.

Save anything more adventurous for later in the evening — or the honeymoon.

Don’t forget the getting-ready moments

One final detail that’s easy to overlook is the morning itself.

Some of the most meaningful photographs are taken while you’re getting ready — relaxed, surrounded by the people you love. It’s worth having something you feel beautiful in for that part of the day too.

Some nightwear, a silk or satin slip, a soft robe — nothing overly complicated, just something that feels special and photographs well. It’s a small detail, but one you’ll be very glad you thought about.
